If you’re planning a trip to Nuno Mendes’ red hot Chiltern Firehouse, it’s worth knowing about this rather elegant café across the road from London’s latest big hitter. Fans rave about Monocle’s Japanese breakfast (an omelette flavoured with fish stock and soy, plus a sesame-coated rice ball, pickles and miso soup), but there’s much more to enjoy at this offshoot of the global lifestyle magazine and media brand. You could choose to start your day with a German or English repast, or drop by later for a bowl of corn chowder, a Veneto sandwich or udon noodles with yuzu chicken, before sweetening things with some macarons, green tea cheesecake or Swedish pastries. To drink, the Allpress coffee is “very good”, but the choice also extends to banana juice, hot toddies, mulled wine, Aperol spritz and Peroni beer.
