About MOC Kitchen

There’s no missing the trend for Vietnamese food around the capital, and the opening of MOC Kitchen marks another stage in the cuisine’s growth away from its Shoreditch heartland. Tucked into the arches under Charing Cross Station, this modern, informal Vietnamese restaurant-cum-street food outlet is already doing a roaring trade. The popularity is hardly surprising: there’s something deeply attractive about cooking that’s full of bright, vibrant, natural flavours and colours, that’s fresh and zingy, but generally low in calories. Drop in for the familiar – slow-cooked beef pho, spring and summer rolls, and crispy salt and pepper squid – or try something slightly more unusual: braised catfish in salted caramel sauce, for instance, or sizzling wok-fried goat. You’ll be hard-pressed to spend £15 per person here, or half that if you’re ordering a takeaway.

Authentic street food in Charing Cross
27 July 2015
Moc Kitchen reminded me of my travels in Vietnam where the street food was plentiful and deeply deeply delicious. Moc Kitchen have all the favourites like Pho and rolls but there are some other quite unusual dishes like the lemongrass beef rolled in wild betel leaves - juicy, tender and filling. The aubergine and tofu hotpot was rich and meaty even though there was no meat in it. All the dishes are full of Vietnemese herbs chosen for their health benefits and flavour by the owner - at least that's what she told me when I asked about the betel leaves. She was born in Hanoi and came to London just a couple of years ago to do what she knows best - create street food for Londoners. Make sure you finish with a Vietnamese coffee - not like any coffee Ive tried before full of rich spicy notes and the coffee sits on a layer of creamy condensed milk - sounds a bit weird but it is totally yummy. Prices are brilliant you easily get a two course meal for around £10. Loved it.
