SquareMeal Review of Afternoon Tea at The Bloomsbury

Located in a magnificent neo-Georgian Grade II-listed building, and once a teatime home-from-home for the young Princess Elizabeth (now our Queen), the Coral Room at The Bloomsbury Hotel still cuts quite a dash as a venue for that most English of afternoon repasts. Ornate candelabra, patterned sofas and lush carpets set the tone for a traditional £30 spread that includes buttermilk scones and unusual sandwiches (pastrami with Dijon mayo on tomato bread, say) plus seasonal fruit tarts, Victoria sponge and other classic cakes. For an extra £5 you can add a cheeky ‘tea’ cocktail or a glass of sparkling Ridgeview wine – a royal favourite served for the Queen’s 80th birthday and Diamond Jubilee. If you want something less extravagant, plump for a straightforward cream tea with scones, clotted cream and jam (£14.50).

About

Tucked away in the magnificent, Grade II-listed neo-Georgian Bloomsbury Hotel, The Coral Room is easily recognised thanks to its coral pink colour palette and stunning art deco bar. Moody art deco lamps on the bar, plush stools at the counter and incredible chandeliers hanging from the ceiling recall the fun and frivolity of the Jazz Age, and The Coral Room serves food from early morning until late evening, transitioning from pastries, cereal and eggs to international-minded small plates and cocktails.

In between, though, The Coral Room serves afternoon tea in this lovely location - if you come to the Bloomsbury Hotel in search of sweet and savoury treats, fine teas, Champagne and a bit of pampering, this is where you'll end up. As usual, tea is made up of a selection of sweets, savouries and scones, but afternoon tea at The Bloomsbury is a little more than your average cheese scone and British Rail cuppa. The fun starts with finger sandwiches - marinated cucumber and cream cheese on spinach bread, egg mayonnaise on brioche, and coronation chicken on cocoa and malt bread, for example - then continues with carefully constructed sweets, including lemon and basil drizzle cake, ginger cheesecake with pear compote, and blackberry and lemongrass jelly with lemongrass cream.

No afternoon tea would be complete without scones, of course, and at The Bloomsbury you get two - a vanilla and lemon, and golden raisin, both served with Devonshire clotted cream and Scottish raspberry jam.

Teas are supplied by Ronnefeldt and range from English Breakfast and Earl Grey to Moroccan Mint and Darjeeling Summer Gold. Naturally, you also have the option to add some bubbles to your afternoon tea, in the form of Champagne - either Moet Imperial or Moet & Chandon Rose Imperial.
