SquareMeal Review of King’s Library restaurant at The British Library

Peyton and Byrne’s ever-growing list of nostalgic canteens, bakeries and restaurants have found their way into some of the proudest cultural institutions in the land from the Royal Academy and the National Gallery to the British Library – not to mention Heal’s department store. All have two things in common: easy-on-the-eye good looks and a passion for British produce (even when the concept itself is anything but patriotic). Sustaining breakfasts get the early birds going, while gourmet ‘fairy cakes’, pies, savouries and thick-cut sandwiches comprise the bulk of the group’s all-day menus, with home-baked fig tarts, treacle loaves, Scotch eggs and sausage rolls all tempting visitors away from their shopping, their books and their guided tours.

Relatively good.

I came here for sightseeing and had lunch at the restaurant. It’s not as bad as some other reviewers have said. The salesperson kindly showed me how to buy the meal — it was like a buffet, where you can eat as much as you like. The food was served in a really fancy way, and the great lighting here made the atmosphere very inviting.

The food itself isn’t particularly special — about the same as other UK restaurants — but you might consider stopping by if you’re feeling hungry around King’s Cross. There are plenty of chairs, so it’s easy to find a seat, and the calm, quiet environment is quite relaxing.

Peyton and Byrne have used their monopoly at the BL to serve overpriced stale food to a captive audience. Tasteless salads, stale bread, hard cakes – and we pay the privilege. The coffee is pretty good and the service is polite, but in general, this is to be avoided.

Verging on racketeering
Utterly utterly incompetent service and average food for a kings ransom. Never ever again. I don't think I have ever felt so ripped off in London. They should lose their franchise at the BL immediately. Speechless.
