Having grown from a pottery studio in a derelict garage, to an all-day dining restaurant and bar, Kiln Newcastle is a truly unique venue.
Located in Ouseburn - a cool, vibrant neighbourhood in Newcastle - Kiln operates as a ceramics cafe, bar and restaurant. It started out in 2017, with wheel-thrown pottery coming first, and food shortly after. Both are united in a fire-forward approach, with Middle Eastern dishes cooked over an open flame and served on kiln-fired plates from the studio. The space is made up of two dining rooms, a bar and a pottery studio, with an open kitchen and sunny outdoor seating area. Its design encourages a communal experience, with large banquet-style wooden tables and plenty of space kept for walk-ins.
At Kiln Newcastle, Middle Eastern cuisine meets Northern ingredients. Their seasonal British larder informs the menu, with brunch, lunch and evening dishes that change depending on the local produce. Start your morning with smoked salmon and creme fraiche on homemade sourdough, or creamy butterbeans and samphire with two poached eggs. If you’re on the move, choose from a selection of freshly prepared grab and go sandwiches.
Heading into the afternoon, the food offering expands to include meze and grill dishes, like tahini cauliflower with lemon and coriander, lamb chops with tzatziki, baked halloumi with black sesame honey glaze, and charred leeks with labneh and chilli oil. Come evening, the dinner menu remains much the same, alongside larger plates, like smoky flat iron steaks and charcoal roasted seabass. Plenty of the dishes can be made vegan and gluten-free, offering a welcoming and inclusive environment for all.
For a sweet finish, there’s also a handful of refined desserts, such as dark chocolate mousse with sea salt and olive oil, rose water rice pudding, and pistachio, walnut and orange blossom baklava.
