Opposite the Odeon cinema and housed in a former Pizza Hut outlet, Illegal Jack’s is a Spartan spot with plain oak benches and tables, some wall art explaining the food, an open-to-view grill and a
mixed following of hungry students, young families, office workers and pre-show culture vultures. The menu is broadly Tex-Mex with some additions from further afield, and the idea is to follow
Jack’s ‘four-point plan’: choose your ‘weapon’ (burrito, taco or quesadilla), fill it with anything from slow-cooked beef carnitas to haggis, add some beans and top with salsa. Otherwise, plump for
one of the special fajitas, chilli bowls, nachos or salad bowls, followed by a scoop of Mackie’s ice cream. To drink, go for Brewdog beer, Corona or a pitcher full of margarita. Half-price helpings
for the under-12s.
