The Outsider champions seasonal, fresh produce through a modern European lens. And while the name suggests otherwise, you'll find this gem in the heart of the Old Town, blessed with castle views. The menu at The Outsider changes frequently, focusing on quality produce and offering dishes that draw on European classics, often flecked with Scottish flair.
The menu changes regularly, but you might expect to see starters like mutton and goat terrine with butternut, apricot and almond chutney; piquillo peppers stuffed with cod brandade; or honey and whisky braised onion with smoked king oyster mushroom, stilton, and fennel oatcake.
As for your main course, there's a whole section dedicated to fish and seafood, including white wine steamed mussels with cream, bacon and parmesan; whole roasted lobster with garlic butter, salad, and fries; or pan-fried cod with miso-glazed butternut squash.
Other main dishes include chargrilled pork loin with mushroom ragu and stilton scone, charred venison haunch with haggis and beetroot, and ribeye steak with lemon garlic butter and hand-cut chips. You'll also find meat-free dishes, based around proteins like seitan and flavoursome veg like artichokes.
On the side, be sure to order a few delicious accompaniments. These may include spicy chipotle whitebait with lime aioli, apple and beetroot raisin coleslaw, fries, olives, artisan breads, and sweet potato wedges served with chive creme fraiche.
For pudding, the chocolate and espresso pave comes with peanut and yoghurt ice cream, a tonka bean and elderflower panna cotta arrives with strawberry and basil compote, while the baked plums come with crushed amaretti biscuits and vanilla ice cream. Plus, in addition to a fantastic wine list, there are plenty of great sweet wines and port options to choose from too.
