Home to pastoral landscapes, a thriving high street and a gorgeous cathedral (complete with lush green space surrounding it), Exeter is one of the most popular countryside tourist spots in the UK. The town, one of the largest in Devon, offers up a slice of traditional British culture that appeals to overseas visitors, while also being equipped with all of the modern amenities one could want. That’s all before you even get to Exeter’s dynamic and extensive restaurant scene, which ranges from reliable high street chains to thoroughly impressive indepdent operations which make the most of seasonality and local produce.

Countryside towns can sometimes be thought of as dull or uninspiring, but no such accusations could be levelled at Exeter, which boasts the title of the second largest city in the county of Devon.

Exeter boasts a vast student population thanks to being home to one of the country’s best universities, so you can often expect to find students working on their laptops in the city’s raft of coffee shops and cafes. Exeter is not just known for being a home to academia though, as the city also offers up some great shopping opportunities at the recently refurbished Princess Hay and Guildhall developments, while the multi-level outpost of John Lewis here is somewhat of a local landmark.

Once you have made your way through Exeter’s many shops and sights though (including the famous Exeter cathedral), you will no doubt have worked up an appetite. Luckily, there are plenty of Exeter restaurants which can satisfy each and every one of your cravings, ranging from well-recognised brands to local, independent outfits. There are plenty of restaurants near Exeter too, found just outside of the buzzy city centre, which offer fine dining or cosy pub grub, often with on-site accomodation available as well.
