SquareMeal Review of Canonbury Kitchen

Tucked away on an Islington side street, this 40-seater neighbourhood Italian has a friendly, informal feel thanks to its open kitchen, exposed brickwork & stripped-back wooden floors. It hopes to attract locals who want home-style cooking without the effort of having to cook it themselves. The main men – owner Max Tilelli, manager Massimo Corona & head chef Marco Botto – are all from the south, so the food ranges from classics such as fritto misto to twists on old favourites including grilled swordfish with tomato sauce & orange peel or lemon & limoncello tiramisu. The kitchen also offers daily specials & a keenly priced, three-course lunch menu, while the wine list spreads itself far & wide, taking in many of the owner’s favourites from the Old & New Worlds.

This is a lovely space – bare brick walls and pale wood furniture – and a friendly feel. The restaurant is located in a quiet street off Highbury Corner and the food is quality Italian in a modern style. Prices are good value for this part of London – £87 for 2 people for two course, water and an excellent bottle of wine. The pasta starters were excellent – the highlight being linguine with clams which was the best pasta course I have had for a long time. Main courses included sea bream and chicken breast – both of which were very good. We had a lovely white wine from Alto Adige – one of their most expensive – which was crisp and citrusy. Friendly service and some tasteful Italian pop music completed a lovely meal. Well worth a trip if you live locally.
