SquareMeal Review of Brix London

Bronze Award

Trendy, stylish, with a touch of glamour; the interiors of this multi-faceted venue are inspired by urban New York. Industrial-chic is the best way to describe BRIX’s apartment-style concept – urban murals, exposed brickwork and sleek black metal are combined with dark wood, spotlights and unique features like the finery of a grand piano. Speaking of finery, make sure to stop at the bar where the mixologists show off their talents in their gold cocktail collection featuring painted gold-rimmed glasses and garnishes.

Adventurous starters kicked off the evening, the best of which was a crispy, flaky, pastry with creamy salmon filling, with pickled radish and endive providing a necessary sharp kick.

For mains, the Marmite glazed beef short rib is a must-try. Soft and tender, the meat falls off the bone and the Marmite gives a slight savoury twang. Marmite: you either love it or hate it, but we’re sure even the haters would love this one. The crispy fried chicken burger was decent enough, but it was overshadowed by blistered, smoky wedges of grilled hispi cabbage on the side, topped with pecorino and beef crackling - a great blend of sweet and salty. The fries were a talking point with our fellow diners, who asked whether we recommended them. The answer? Yes, we certainly do.

Continuing onto dessert, we tucked into the waitress’ recommendation of the Daim bar cheesecake, and were not disappointed; light, creamy, with a hint of salty toffee and rich chocolate. The sticky toffee pudding also got the creative BRIX treatment with a warming hint of cinnamon giving new life to an old-school classic.

While drinks arrived a little slow, this was testament to BRIX’s popularity as both the bar and dining area was packed full of life, laughter and music. The staff, professional but friendly, kept a warm, relaxed atmosphere that still gave a nod to fine dining; overall, the whole experience was as sweet as that cheesecake.

About

Located inside the old Metal Box Factory between London Bridge and Southwark, BRIX London is a New York-inspired bar, restaurant and events space. It’s the third project from Michael Lythgoe and his partner Cidalia Rodrigues, who have teamed up with chef Radek Nitkowski and DJ TROYBOI to create a multi-faceted venue for guests to eat, drink, dance and socialise together.

While the venue is split across numerous spaces, including a lounge bar, multiple private dining rooms and a late night basement bar, the main dining hall is where guests can feast on exciting dishes inspired by global cuisines. Its mission is to showcase seasonal and sustainable British ingredients in dishes that reflect the steak and smoke houses of New Yorks meat-packer district in Brooklyn. The menu is varied and offers everything from small sharing plates to grills and burgers, while a brunch menu and Sunday roast is available at the weekend.

Examples of small plates include sourdough with chicken butter and olive oil, oxtail doughnuts with Montgomery cheddar and sweet pepper jam, and grilled delica pumpkin with avocado, casel franco, baby kale and mustard dressing. While main dishes might feature Marmite-glazed short rib with kohlrabi remoulade, chilli and pecorino, and cod with courgettes, samphire, brown butter and charred endive.

Central to the urban, New York apartment-style dining space is a long wooden bar where a team of crafty mixologists are in charge of its signature cocktail list. Look out for creations such as New York Fashioned made with Jameson, sweet and dry Vermouth, Cointreau and grenadine, and Brix Mary featuring vodka, a homemade spice mix, lemon juice and tomato juice.

The brunch menu is served on Saturdays and Sundays and features a range of classic, seasonal plates – think hot smoked salmon on toast with cream cheese, a hard-boiled egg and house pickles, and caramelised peached with cream cheese, mint, honey and almonds on sourdough. Meanwhile, its Sunday roast includes your choice of meat or veg served with roast potatoes, cauliflower, carrots and grilled hispi, along with a selection of tasty sides.

Five-Star Sunday Feast with Brilliant Hospitality

Wow! What a fantastic Sunday lunch — genuinely the biggest I’ve ever had. There was more than enough to fill you up, especially if you choose the two-meat roast. I didn’t realise they didn’t have a children’s menu, but the chef kindly offered us two mini roasts for free, which was such a thoughtful gesture.

They accommodated us brilliantly, and even at 1pm when it was fairly quiet, the atmosphere was perfect. The female singer was excellent and really added to the experience. A big thank you to the team looking after us, especially our waiter — the Scouser (sorry I missed your name!).

A lovely extra touch was the surprise for a member of our table celebrating a birthday — a large slice of cheesecake delivered with four spoons so we could all share. Such a kind and memorable moment.

We can’t wait to return very soon.

Cool Vibe, Fantastic Food, Best Night Out In London

This place is everything you could want from a night out in London - it’s a restaurant, bar, lounge, and downstairs there’s even a club. An amazing experience from the start of the night to the end of it. The hostess greeted us warmly as soon as we entered, and immediately led us past the small but glamorous bar, to the table we’d reserved for dinner - and even offered to take our drink orders so we wouldn’t have to wait.

The food was fantastic - delicious, well-prepared and of a high quality, (I later found out that their kitchen is headed by none other than renowned chef Radek Nitkoski - and he didn’t let us down). I especially recommend the Beef Short Ribs -  the flavors, the melt-in-the mouth texture; the whole dish was phenomenal. Also, check out their oxtail donuts - you won’t be disappointed.

The servers were very friendly, and came over to check on us often enough to make sure we never ended up with an empty glass, without being overbearing. The environment was relaxed and chill, with a great DJ spinning some absolute tunes while we ate and tried not to dance out of our chairs.

Probably one of the best things about this place is that it’s an entire night out in one place. After dinner, we headed downstairs to a classy underground club and bar, where another DJ was once again spinning some absolute tunes. And that’s where we spent the rest of the night. The second best thing about this place is that it doesn’t try to hard - and it’s anything you want it to be on any given night. It attracts an interesting and eclectic group of people. The manager, Lee, makes it his personal priority to ensure you’re having an effortlessly fun night. But words just don’t do it justice - so check it out for yourself! Personally, I’ll be checking out their weekend brunch next.
