SquareMeal Review of Bombay Bay

Portsmouth and neighbouring Southsea are awash with Indian and Bangladeshi restaurants, but comfortable, smart Bombay Bay is in another league. Seafaring artefacts chime with the restaurant’s bird’s-eye view of the yacht-filled marina, while in summer the balcony patio is a popular spot. The modern Indian menu emphasises lighter cooking, with well-presented dishes produced from well-sourced ingredients such as crab Malibar, chicken with mango, coconut, almonds & cream or king prawn suka coated with a memorable sauce of garlic, chilli, coriander, tumeric & coconut. Follow this with a superior tandoor mix, a skewer of chicken, lamb, duck, beef and prawns, and you’ll understand why Bombay Bay is such a draw.

We won't be going back!

Sadly, we've had to complain again about the poor quality of their takeaway food. Finding the finger of a latex glove in your son's naan bread was a low point, but when ordering a cauliflower bhaji and a sag aloo you at least expect the first ingredient to dominate the dish. Not at the Bombay Bay where potato is clearly in abundance. I telephoned to explain the issue and the 'manager' became insulting and lost his temper, he didn't apologise, didn't seem to care, saying two pieces of cauliflower is normal. When I suggested to him the chef was possibly new/lacked training, he said "no, the same chef for 23 years." Then the chef has forgotten how to cook properly. If you have to explain, it means they don't understand.

I have eaten in 100's of Indian returants over the last 20 years including the michelin stared Benares in Mayfair in London. This place in my opinion is the best. The food is sensational excellent depth of taste fantastically presented and served by very polite and helpfull staff. The food seems to be lighter and healthier than a lot of indian resturants but this is in no way compromises taste. I also feel for the quality of food available that the prices are very resonable. If you live in Southsea make the effort and get down there you will not be disapointed!
