SquareMeal Review of Be-Bop-A-Lula

Bronze Award

The King is in the building at this Victorian taphouse – now a memorabilia-lined rock 'n' roll boozer. Hits by Elvis and Buddy, Chubby and Fats are pumped out of a Wurlitzer jukebox along with those of Gene Vincent, whose 1956 smash provides the pub (formerly The Monarch) with its new moniker. Back-combed beehives and pencil skirts are encouraged at The Alma’s new sister, as are pointy winkle-pickers and leather biker jackets worn with attitude. Under jangly guitars dangling from the ceiling, strike a Jailhouse Rock pose with ice-cold American brewskis… or beers by homeboys Hammerton. To eat, re-imagined 1950s diner chow includes ‘Chick Berry’ burger, The Big Mama Thornton (a halloumi, hummus, grilled pepper and aubergine stack), and ‘Hound Dogs’. The ‘Famous Elvis Sandwich’ involves peanut butter and fries; taken in excess as part of a King-sized diet, it may be your passport to premature rock 'n' roll heaven.
