Street-food traders Bangers and Bacon have now created their first permanent restaurant, supplying an all-day menu in light, stylish surroundings. Beastro starts the day with breakfast and brunch options such as homemade sausages, buttermilk pancakes and breakfast bagels, while lunchtime sees a more casual grab-and-go menu with steak or grilled halloumi sandwiches, wraps and salads. Evenings are more sophisticated affairs, with candlelit tables and a chef’s table to watch the kitchen action. The emphasis is on local, seasonal produce, from Bury black pudding to Lancashire leek crumble. We enjoyed starters of crisp golden ham hock bonbons with mustard mayonnaise, and plump pan-fried scallops with sharp pickled cucumber and lime aïoli. Mains were equally alluring – aged British fillet steak served with well-seasoned beef-dripping chips, and perfectly pink Cheshire lamb rump with mini roast potatoes, seasonal greens and rich meaty jus. The succinct wine list is carefully designed to pair with the dishes, while an impressive beer selection includes plenty from Manchester breweries such as Cloudwater, ShinDigger and Alphabet. Confident, well-executed cooking and a convivial atmosphere make Beastro a welcome addition to Spinningfields.
