SquareMeal Review of Menagerie

Bronze Award

Menagerie is one of Manchester’s most talked-about restaurants, and for good reason. This Spinningfields venue is a riot of gaudy chandeliers, dangling light bulbs, tongue-in-cheek Greek sculptures and trompe l’oeil flocks of birds, with an enormous catwalk dividing the dining area down the middle. This is where scantily clad performers put on shows throughout the night – expect anything from trapeze artists to burlesque acts. The menu offers up a diverse range of world cuisine, from gourmet sliders, lightly spiced chicken milanese and sea bass tempura with edamame purée to crispy duck salad and brunch favourites such as Cajun eggs Benedict or the medianoche sandwich – a ham, mustard, Swiss cheese and truffle combo popular in Havana nightclubs. A huge drinks list and an ever-changing line-up of flashy cocktails mean it’s also ideal if you fancy lingering after the plates are cleared, but don’t be put don’t be put off by the ostentatious glamour – Menagerie is gloriously OTT, and proud of it.

About Menagerie

Menagerie, Greater Manchester is an American bar and restaurant serving a menu of world-inspired dishes, plus fine wines, cocktails and gin. There is also a bottomless brunch menu and afternoon tea.

Menagerie is a striking modern and thoughtfully decorated bar and restaurant, with plenty of insta-worthy details, flower walls and soft lantern lighting. Menagerie welcomes celebrations and events, including hen parties and baby showers. There is also a festive menu and a party menu available which can be served as a sit-down meal, or as a selection of light bites and nibbles.

The main a la carte menu has a number of small plates and tapas style dishes such as duck croquettes and tempura king prawns, plus chicken, beef and halloumi sliders. There is also a ‘raw bar’ which features dishes such as tuna ceviche and beetroot tartare, plus sushi rolls, and salads.

If you’re looking for larger plates there is a grill serving fillet steaks, ribeye and chateaubriand. Other main courses include king prawn linguini, the Menagerie Burger and a cauliflower steak served with salsa verde.

There is a large sides menu which features dishes such as truffle mac and cheese, French fries, and buttered greens.

The dessert menu is playful and indulgent, with dishes such as chocolate vegan s’mores, sticky waffle with toffee, and red velvet Oreo crunch cake.

The drinks menu includes a large wine list featuring the Menagerie rosé, the cocktail menu is varied and fun – will you go for a love potion made with Bacardi, pineapple and lime, or perhaps you’ll choose unicorn tears made with Empress gin, rose syrup and prosecco.

If you’re heading to Menagerie for a special occasion, the afternoon tea looks striking and indulgent, there is also a good looking Sunday lunch menu which is served with all the trimmings every Sunday from noon.
