There’s a sense of theatre to dining at Scene – its glamorous bar evoking 1950s Bollywood, and its large open-kitchen dining area resplendent with dark wood, quirky antiques and intimate booths. The menu is inspired by subcontinental street-food vendors; many dishes are designed for sharing, including lunchtime thali platters. We relished a crisp-skinned sea bass fillet in a creamy Kashmiri sauce, and tender marinated lamb chops grilled over charcoal for depth of flavour. ‘Desi Dhaba’ dishes are served family-style in an authentic hot metal balti brought straight from the stove to the table; our succulent chicken on the bone was rich with aromatic spices, coriander and sweet tomatoes. The drinks list includes Indian lagers and soft drinks, cocktails and wines plus an extensive spirit selection. With its street-side outdoor veranda and heated riverside terrace (not to mention the new takeaway tiffin lunch option), Scene adds welcome spice to Spinningfields.
