ATLAS is the headline dining destination of Rockliffe Hall’s ambitious transformation into a world-class gastronomic resort, run by James and Maria Close. Opening summer 2026, this 36-cover standalone restaurant sees acclaimed chefs James and Maria Close return after closing the two Michelin-starred Raby Hunt, with an immersive, chef-led experience shaped by their global travels and classical technique.
The journey begins with Champagne and aperitifs, before guests are guided through a carefully choreographed tasting menu served in distinct sequences. Early courses offer a refined tour of the globe, drawing on flavours and memories from Asia and the Americas, while later dishes delve deeper into specific destinations that have inspired the pair. A trip to La Rochelle, for example, might translate into an elegant oyster dish rooted in French tradition but delivered with modern precision.
The theatre of the space is central to the experience. Three open kitchen islands anchor the dining room, each dedicated to different stages of the menu, from opening introductions to sauces and patisserie. A six-seat chef’s table runs alongside the action, offering an intimate view of the craftsmanship at play, framed by visible ageing fridges, a citrus display and a spice wall.
James Close is joined by a handpicked team, including Maria Close overseeing patisserie and development, Assistant Culinary Director Adam Molloy, Head Chef Shaun Hurrell, Restaurant Manager Jack Adams and Head of Wine Manuel Ghezzi, formerly of The Connaught. Wine plays a starring role, with a globally focused list spanning classic and contemporary producers, complemented by a dedicated wine display and a new private cellar.
Housed in a striking pavilion overlooking Rockliffe’s grounds, ATLAS blends modern design with subtle nods to the North East’s heritage, positioning it as a serious destination for luxury dining in the region and beyond.
