The Grade II-listed Argyll is a bobby dazzler, its screened-off snugs’ mahogany beauty reflected at every turn in myriad decorative etched mirrors. This glorious pile survives largely unaltered since its last makeover... in 1895. Given its central location opposite the Palladium (a secret tunnel connects the two venues), you can expect the place to be regularly overrun with tourists, show-goers & sightseers – so be prepared to dig your way through the crowd if you fancy a pint from the cast of well-kept real ales on rotation (think independent names such as Cairngorm Trade Winds, Leeds Midnight Bell or St Austell Proper Job). The Argyll’s decent food offering covers everything from fishfinger sandwiches & lamb-shank pie to rump steak with peppercorn sauce & Eton mess, although it’s easily upstaged by the surroundings.

I was racially profiled at this restaurant that I visited. The server bar manager started yelling at the server who was seating me somewhere that I requested. The bar manager then proceeded to tell me that I needed to pay before having the meal, I explained to her that this did not make any sense and that this is something done to black people where I come from, she ignored me and walked away. I then asked other patrons if they had to pay ahead of time, they said no. I walked up and left, then I complained to the corporate. A week later, the general manager, Francesca Mullen, sent me an email, where she accused this situation of being my fault, and insinuated that I was delusional. My mental health has been severely impacted. She sent a long email at 11PM at night to degrade me and belittle me.
I visited here on Tuesday 16th July in the early evening with my son Josh Anderson who works there. I was down in London from my home in Scotland for his graduation the following day. I have heard Josh speaking about the pub on many occasions and it was lovely to finally see it in person. What a truly wonderful building seeped in character and tradition.
