3 South Place (bar)

SquareMeal Review of 3 South Place (bar)

‘Art for art’s sake; money for God’s sake’ sang 10CC – it might be the theme for D&D London’s artfully laid-back boutique City hotel with its nods to nearby Spitalfields’ role as the cradle of Brit-art. By hotel standards, £9.50 isn’t a lot to pay for a decent cocktail in its three drinking spaces, of which the monochrome chic ‘garden bar’ will be the place to frequent come clement weather. The games room is named after Bond villain Le Chiffre, and there’s also a bit of a spy theme going on with the drinks: hammer & sickle; 007’s Vesper martini, and ‘the spy who loved me’ (Bacardi Superior, honey, raspberry and lime). Bar snacks encompass Scotch eggs, mini burgers, crab on toast, fishcakes and rarebit ‘soldiers’, while upbeat staff are dressed in hipster uniforms that recall Aeroflot stewards circa Moonraker.

The problem of having a decent watering hole on route home, means frequent pit- stops for a quick drink or four. Now that we are in Christmas mode, the bar area is packed, most nights. The interior is as explained in the review, with interesting art works throughout the hotel. Having spoken to a number of staff, they all mention the fact that its very busy from 5-9pm, but once all the suits leave for home, it doesn't have the ‘second wave’ of guests, which comparable 5 star hotels thrive on. All the drinks are superbly made, served in beautiful glasses. In fact, attention to detail is everywhere, which comes as no surprise, as Conran Design were given the interior project. Once the weather picks up, the two outdoor spaces will become highly prized City destinations. Staff seem to have all come from equally smart establishments, so service is intelligent and slick, with moments of good conversation, when time allows. I can't really find fault in the place, but I do hope they manage to build a later evening clientele, so the atmosphere holds, so the staff have something to do.
