SquareMeal Review of Zaika of Kensington

From its spectacular gothic setting (formerly a bank) to its regionally accented cooking, Zaika has carved out its own niche among the capital’s Indian restaurants. Dominated by high ceilings and wood panels, the interior has a whiff of Hogwarts about it, albeit with a large central cocktail bar. It makes a suitably regal setting for the kitchen’s speciality, the Awadhi cuisine of Lucknow in north India. Many dishes are cooked slowly over charcoal flames, giving a gentle smokiness to the likes of fish curry with ginger and coconut or murgh handi lazeez (a creamy chicken speciality flavoured with tomatoes and cashews). Elsewhere, expect Awadhi-style kebabs loaded with lamb, cheese, and garlic, plus fine-dining riffs such as seared scallops with puffed rice or grilled lobster with garlic and mango. All the usual sides and naans are present and correct, while wines have been picked to withstand the spice.

...but service could be faster! We were seated for 30mins before our order arrived. We had our 2+ year-old daugther in tow and were wary of our "window" we had to eat and leave...peacefully! Luckily for us...she behaved beautifully but was on the verge of going bonkers when the food finally arrived, approximately 40mins after we were seated! Once we dug into our food, all of the items we ordered (monkfish kebabs, lamb biryani, papari chat & mushrooms) were very tasty! My wife, who normally shies away from Indian food, anounced that her monkfish was delicious. The Biryani was as advertsed..excellent! No gripes other than thel lenght of time it to get our food. Will most likely return.

An attractive take on modern day India, this private room reflects the elegance of the main restaurant and can sit up to 32 people in comfort using a variety of configurations, or 65 for a standing reception. Personalized menus and lavish flowers are a nod to the deep rooted understanding of grand hospitality and the days when the The Nawabs, historic rulers of the North-West Indian region of Awadh, were well known for their extravagant feasts. But there is an understanding of the corporate world too, with AV equipment and projectors.

If total seclusion is not your thing, you can also opt for Zaika’s semi-private dining space that is off-set from the main restaurant and works well for both corporate gatherings and private dinners – 18 seated and 30 standing.
