Apothecaries were once a common feature of Shoreditch: hence the name of this angular, glassy new bar-restaurant situated in the dramatically geometric M by Montcalm Hotel. Hence, too, the menus, where herbs, wine and spices are prominent. Food in the mezzanine restaurant is divided into snacks, ‘minor’ (small plates) and ‘major’ (large). Try ‘minor’ highlights such as smoked eel, jelly and seaweed scones, served as a terrine in a jar accompanied by a cloud of smoke (the sweetness of the jelly perfectly cutting through the smoky-saline eel), or tender octopus tentacles atop al dente squid-ink risotto that’s suffused with a beautiful lemony tang. Major plates include plenty of fish (try the lemongrass-smoked sea bream), the seasonal likes of pea and wild garlic risotto, and tender, pink steaks (28-day aged, from Lake District farmers). Be sure to order the spicy, crispy fries on the side. We can also recommend wrapping things up with a honey cheesecake accompanied by fresh lemon sorbet and a pleasing glob of honeycomb – although a tempting alternative is the whizz-bang Sazerac cocktail that arrives with disappearing candyfloss, served in the ground-floor bar. Just the tonic needed.
The 'In & Out' lunch offer includes one course and a soft drink, glass of house wine or half-pint of draught beer for £9.
Available: 23 March 2017

Kitchen is headed by Paul Welburn, formerly of Rhodes W1.The restaurant’s inspiration comes from the 18th and 19th centuries, when Shoreditch was one of London’s main areas for medicine-making, surgeries, and doctors. Hence the name of the restaurant. The menu focuses on the use of herbs, spices and wine in its recipes and cocktail taking...
