Squaremeal Review of The Modern Pantry Finsbury Square ?

It may not be as “homely” as the Clerkenwell original, but fans reckon that this second branch of Anna Hansen’s Modern Pantry is a “strong contender” for lunch, dinner and private bashes. Housed in Finsbury Square’s art-deco Alphabeta building, it strikes a clean-lined minimalist pose, with high ceilings, whitewashed walls and a standalone tapas bar serving up international small plates alongside sherry-based cocktails and other ‘liveners’. For the rest, head chef Rob McLeary offers up perky fusion dishes inspired by Hansen’s travels and Kiwi roots – think seared diver-caught scallops with chorizo and Urfa chilli mash, slow-roast pork belly with soy-braised lentils, saffron onions, marinated feta and prunes or grilled rib-eye with cassava chips, salad greens and spiced gooseberry relish. Desserts also see some daring flavour combinations such as black peppercorn and yoghurt parfait with strawberry and cardamom sorbet. Wines back up the global theme, and service gets a big cheer.

Business lunch and dinner contender

Not as homely as Clerkenwell but a strong contender for business lunch or dinner, and they have a large private room. Although they seemed to have run out of a number of things on the menu and indeed the wine list, service was attentive, not overbearing and what the food and drink provided was excellent.

Editor's pick The menu here is foodie-interesting, with several ingredients we had to google, but more to the point, the flavours are amazing. Great breads to start included a rye & caraway soda bread that got eaten up very quickly, it was too tasty.     I always wondered what all the fuss about brunch was. Was it only the province of the Ladies who Lunch?
    We decided to embark on this journey to the heart of the city (I know how estate agent that phrase sounds) to sample the arrayed delicacies of brunch.

Anna Hansen

From her first job as ‘washer-upper’ for Fergus Henderson when he was at The French House, Anna Hansen was clearly destined for great things. In 1992 she teamed up with fellow Kiwi Peter Gordon and spent the next decade working alongside him – first at Green Street, then the Sugar Club Soho, before partnering with him at The Providores. In 2008, she opened The Modern Pantry in Clerkenwell, with a new City branch planned for 2015.
