SquareMeal Review of Sri Nam

Cabot Square has a restaurant for nearly every taste, including those with a penchant for the orient, but if you can't make up your mind, the owners of Sri Nam have the answer – a casual ground-floor brasserie that dips its toes into the waters of Thailand, Vietnam, China and Singapore for a pick and mix selection of noodles, curries, steamed and stir-fried dishes. You could kick off with a bento box and miso soup, move on to barbecued spare ribs and top it off with sizzling Mongolian lamb. But for a tighter focus on the cooking, follow the sweeping staircase up to the smarter (and pricier) dining room, which concentrates on Thai classics: spicy tom yum soups, rich curries, pad thai and so on. There are no authentic desserts though – instead, you'll be offered tiramisu, chocolate brownie or New York cheesecake.

It's been awhile since we ate at Sri Nam. Our dinner plans changed slightly at the last minute so we ended up staying for some cocktails and bar food, then ordered take away (Phad Seeayu (yum!!) and crispy duck rolls). A relaxing way to end the work week!

Food was not of acceptable standard for this price level. The jungle curry was far too salty, the tom yum soup was too sour, the fish cakes were moist but should have had thai herbs mixed in for more flavour. Pad thai was rather plain. Only the duck fillet was tasty. Food portions were small and poor value for 8-12 pounds a dish. On their bill they labelled the 12.5% service charge as optional. When I paid half of the service, they insisted that I pay the full amount. A very disappointing evening overall.

Sri ‘nom nom’! Delicious thai food!! Maybe its because as I child I watched Ken Hom cook, but I do think this is delicious perfect thai in an easy setting. The dark moody interior lends itself to making what you want of this place. Whether you go for a bento box lunch which is amazing value for money and good food, or a proper dinner in the upstairs restaurant – it is always a treat. The staff are as friendly as you can get in this type of restaurant, and very accomodating. Large groups are welcomed and nothing is too much effort. This is my corporate lunch staple for anyone who knows good spicy food! From the prawn crackers, chicken green curry (one of the best I have had!), to the ‘tiger cry’ beef, each dish is mouth-watering. Its the only thai restaurant in Canary Wharf (there are others in the near vicinity) and this is the best. Its just a shame they are closed on weekends!
