One of London’s more accessible Peruvian restaurants, this cramped Kingly Court resident is a miniature maelstrom of colour, flavour and sound. Trendy-looking staff set the tone and the vibe is fast-paced but “really friendly”, amid colourful graffiti and black-and-white snaps of Peruvian life. The main event is, of course, the ceviche list, which runs from sea bass via octopus and sweet potato purée to a veggie variant involving barbecued artichoke. There’s also much more to enjoy, including gloriously sticky piles of aubergine and sweet potato doughnuts (picarones), and a full BBQ contingent: the baby back ribs in a sticky soy, ginger and sesame sauce come highly recommended. Much of the menu is gluten-free, and there’s also a good-value lunch deal from Monday to Thursday. The cocktail list is ruled by Pisco (we recommend sticking to the traditional sours), while a short wine list makes room for Chile and Argentina.

Peruvian food remains distinctly on-trend in London – and so it should do, since the country offers a wide range of flavoursome dishes spanning meat, fish and veg. There isn’t a lot of gluten in the Peruvian diet and so this should also tick a box for many. Much as I love all things Peruvian (and I can highly recommend the country as a holiday destination), I was instinctively put off Señor Ceviche because of its name. Why – it seems only fair to ask – would anyone choose to call a restaurant the equivalent of ‘Mr Raw-Fish?’ Maybe that’s the point though – it is memorable to the point of absurdity. Also, I’m in my early 40’s and maybe the younger trend-setters of Soho love the name. The restaurant itself emphasises informality, being full of bright colours, graffiti-covered walls and uplifting music. It was certainly busy when a comrade and I visited on a recent Friday lunchtime, clearly suggestive that Señor Ceviche is doing something right. Setting aside any name-based prejudice, my simple assessment is that the food delivers. The menu is also simple (16 dishes, all intended for sharing) and well-priced (no dish at more than £12.50) and what was lost in terms of slowness of service was mostly compensated for in terms of the staff’s enthusiasm. Onto the food, and we sampled six dishes, all of them superb. Both are ceviche options were first-class. We opted for the restaurant’s classic take on the dish (namely sea bass with sweet potato puree, red onion and coriander) as well as their special of the day (a prawn variation). The fish in each dish was moist and succulent, its flavour enhanced by the well-paired other ingredients. Despite its name, Señor Ceviche also demonstrated that it can execute well on its meat dishes, and we rated both the decadent sticky pork ribs as well as the flat iron steak. Testament to its success, a second Señor Ceviche is opening in Fitzrovia. On with the Peruvian revolution.
lemongrass pisco sour – quite tangy with a gentle fragrance of lemongrass. Luckily the cocktail was not too sugary because I never like sweetness before pudding so it went down well with the two starters.
aubergine picarones (sweet potato and aubergine doughnus with anchiote, coriander yoghurt and peanuts) £5.00 – The aubergines in the slightly bigger pieces were not cooked through and I personally did not like the sauce.
chicharonnes (slow cooked pork belly with sweet soy) £6.00 – if you know what tau yu bak means, then you know what the taste is like, if you don't look here. Tastewise was good, being not too sweet or saltish, but the meat was very tough.
Inca trail – taste quite like mojito with again a gentle spice note from the anise.
mr myagi (salmon tiradito with Nikkei tiger's milk, pomegranate, purple shiso & salmon scratchings £7.00) – lovely and light flavours, it was very much a ladies' dish.
senor ceviche (sea bream and octopus ceviche with aji amarillo tiger's milk, sweet potato purée, avocado, coriander, red onion & tempura baby squid £8.50) – well this tiger's milk is not literally milk from the tiger but is the Peruvian term for citrus based marinade that cures seafood in ceviche. A mixture of crunchy, bouncy texture and all the fishy flavours that are beautiful! But honestly, my favourite was the plantain.
pisco punch – my least favourite cocktail because of the strong rosemary in this. But I can understand why this cocktail was chosen to be paried with the following dishes...
anticucho de corazon (beef heart) – sounds exciting. Nothing gruesome in fact, was skewed elegantly and presented with garnishes with contrasting colours that make it look so enticing. The taste is like a heavy meaty flavour, personally it was my least favourite.
supper pollo (chargrilled chicken with rocotto and piquillo pepper salsa) £8.50 – super moist and super delicious! One of my two favourites for the night!
Nikkei greens (charred broccoli, lettuce and courgette with miso, aji amarillo and pickled garlic sauce) £6.00 – splendid work on the charring of the vegetables which could so easily be burnt. My second favourite!
quinoa (black and white quinoa, baby gem, roasted beetroot, avocado, asparagus, edamame beans, choclo corn & queso) £6.00
Lima espresso martini – I like my coffee hot with no sugar but this cocktail was completely the opposite being cold and a light touch of sweetness. It was a pleasant surprise that I enjoyed very much.

Classic and casual food and vibe in the heart of Soho. Some of the dishes were outstanding and tasty and some were a bit bland but would come back for the ribs that looked amazing and some more of the Mr Miyagi that was outstanding. Full review with lots of pictures on the blog.
