Sushi-lovers are spoiled for choice in Crouch End, with two specialist eateries now offering freshly prepared sashimi and nigiri. Nakama is larger than its rival, Wow Simply Japanese, so you stand more chance of getting a walk-in table here at weekends – though the place can lack atmosphere if it's not
busy. Plain white walls, wooden tables and globe lights set the scene, and the kitchen shows its prowess with prettily presented sushi sets as well as show-stopping slivers of sea-bass carpaccio in
a zesty marinade with ginger and pomegranate. Other highlights have included crispy prawn tempura, rich teriyaki eel donburi and nasu dengaku (roasted aubergine topped with punchy miso paste).
Fragrant yuzu sorbet and ‘nutty’ black sesame ice cream are a cut above the Japanese norm, while drinks include sakés, native beers and teas. Takeaways, too.
