SquareMeal Review of Madame D's

Madame D's closed permanently on 31 July 2018

From Harneet and Devina Baweja (the couple behind the hugely popular Gunpowder nearby), this intimate walk-ins only site serves up a Himalayan-inspired small plates menu that throws together influences from India, Nepal, China and Tibet. Five dishes shared between two should do it; don’t miss the masala noodles, smothered in spicy minced lamb and topped with a runny fried egg. Other top shouts include pan-fried duck momos (Tibetan-style steamed dumplings bathed in a rich chilli sauce) and, for less heat, puffy-battered Himalayan fried chicken strips with vinegar dipping sauce. If you’d rather concentrate on the savoury stuff, skip simple desserts such as sticky-sweet rolled date pancakes with scoops of ginger ice cream. Prices can add up, but portions are fair and service is friendly. With its charming, thrown-together look of blackboard menus and candlelit communal tables (above cocktail bar Blessing’s), Madame D’s looks set to be as much of a hit as Gunpowder, but with just 25 covers, we wish Harneet and Devina would open somewhere bigger.
