If you don't mind the slightly longer walk down Kingsland Road or a firewall of hipsters constantly filling the joint, Loong Kee promises no-frills food at affordable prices – plus a BYOB policy. Lunchtimes can be frantic, with harried staff and cramped tables, but persist and you'll find it's just the rush, rather than rudeness, that makes things rather fraught. Rewards come in the shape of steamed minced pork rolls (more flavoursome than the prawn variety), cleansing papaya salad and chicken's feet (if you're feeling brave) – although the roast quail and perfectly spiced 'shaking beef' are our standard orders for main course. The pho and dry noodle dishes are huge – exactly what's required when the weather turns. The menu is extensive, so leave yourself time to go through it properly – if the hard-pressed staff will let you, of course.
