About

FARE restaurant and bar is a wonderful spot that is tucked away in the heart of east London, just a stone's throw from Old Street and Barbican stations. FARE stands out with its striking windows, flooding the ground floor space with natural light and accentuating its industrial chic décor of exposed pipework, white metro wall tiling, and plenty of suspended greenery. The tap room is a versatile all day space that has a pizza oven and access to a charming courtyard, perfect for soaking up the summer rays – when the weather allows. Whereas the wine room is decked with minimalist design and expansive feasting tables, offering the perfect space for cocktail masterclasses, wine tastings, or intimate conversations.

The menu kicks off with small plates, including dishes like ras el hanout with roasted butternut, tabouleh, pomegranate and coconut yoghurt, along with stracciatella and San Daniele D.O.P with sun blushed tomato bruschetta, and a delicious plate of octopus and chorizo with roasted peppers and toasted focaccia. Going into the mains, why not order the corn fed chicken breast with chorizo parmentier potatoes, purple carrots and tarragon sauce, or the ribeye tagliata with rocket, baby spinach and parmesan. There’s also a pretty impressive pizza menu, each at twelve inches, and ranging from toppings of prosciutto cotto with artichoke heart, mushrooms, black olives, fior di latte and tomato, along with classics like a margherita, puttanesca and quattro formaggi, and specials like the beetroot with goat’s cheese, fior di latte, rucola and a smoked chilli jam glaze.

You’ll also spot a delicious brunch menu, which includes all the classics along with pizza, and the option to make it bottomless with Mimosas, FARE lager, Paloma or Prosecco to make it even better.

Not great, avoid

Fare looked lovely from the outside and the menu looked really nice, so we went on a Friday night.

It was busy, and very very noisy - there were three biggish parties outdoing each other to shriek with laughter, really shriek. Nice that people enjoy yourselves but this stopped anyone else having a conversation at all. Not the restaraunts fault, but part of the review since you need to know they often have big parties in.

the knock on effect of this is that the staff are too bisu for the small tables and you feel a bit of a nuisance. Hard to get service, hard to ask for anything.

Main issue, though, was that the food was disappointing. We ordered two small plates as starters and then a main each plus three sides. After a long wait - about 45 minutes - everything came at once. There was no point objecting really, since the food was cooked, but it wasn't great.

The starters had dressing and were very overdressed. My cod main was okay, but a very very small portion even for me, and I don't eat a lot. My companion's guinea fowl looked great and was more than twice the size of my fish - but was not cooked through - it was quite red close to the bone which is a dietary safety issue with poultry of any kind, and he left the red parts. If I'd have been the waiter and had picked up those plates I might have raised it with the kitchen and maybe checked the customer was okay with it, but nothing was said.

As the service had been so slow and disinterested we didn't order dessert, decided we might as well have it at home. Bill fro two included 3 glasses of wine and was about £150. Money not particularly well spent, although it wasn't awful.
