Jamies St. Mary at Hill

SquareMeal Review of Jamies St. Mary at Hill

Regulars at this timeless City wine bar will probably have noticed that a coat of fresh, peppermint-hued paint has been applied to the place in recent months. However, not much has changed in the much-loved, semi-basement room: there’s still plenty of mellow wood to be seen & the restaurant still serves up generous helpings of British food – think fried mushrooms on toast with cream & tarragon before calf’s liver & bacon with mash & onion gravy. Alternatively, nibble on snacks & platters or chomp your way through a 6oz sirloin steak sandwich at the bar. The Jamies wine list is easy to navigate, with informative tasting notes & a dozen recommendations by the glass.

Two issues. Firstly, we both ordered steak, one rare and one medium rare. They delivered these to the wrong persons (rare got medium rare (in reality medium/well done) and my guest got the rare that I had ordered). Secondly, we ordered two portions of buttered spinach to go with the steak, however, these did not arrive until we had nearly finished (and the staff had been reminded several times through the meal!). Despite these hiccups, the service was friendly and food was of good quality. Also, the bill was reduced in compensation for the errors. We had the feeling that several members of staff hadn't been there very long.

Fairly basic pub-grub with slightly less friendly service
