SquareMeal Review of Giorgio Ristorante Italiano

Bronze Award

Tucked beneath the Victorian arches of London’s majestic Leadenhall Market, Giorgio’s is a hidden Italian gem in every sense. Passersby might barely glance at its boxy red entrance, the words ‘Giorgio Ristorante Italiano’ stamped above in block capital letters, but descend the stairs and you’re suddenly in a charming homage to an old-school Italian dining room, wrapped in nostalgic shades of brown and cream.

The sprawling space is unashamedly traditional: crisp white tablecloths, studded leather chairs and vintage artwork set the tone. While co-founders Giorgio and Giovanni can often be found front and centre on the restaurant floor, greeting guests with a warm Italian welcome on arrival.

The menu offers stripped-back, soulful Italian cooking that refuses to hide behind unnecessary embellishments. The team makes all its pasta daily on-site, including delicate little pockets of handmade ravioli filled with ricotta and spinach, then served in a sweet tomato sauce. Beautiful grilled seabass – flaky, well-seasoned and with a crispy skin - is served on a plate ‘as is’, and no less delicious for it. And to finish, a brilliantly executed tiramisu balances velvety layers of mascarpone, sugar and egg yolk with boozy, coffee-soaked sponge.

Giorgio’s feels like it’s been plucked straight out of a sleepy Italian town and thrust into London’s financial district. This makes it endlessly charming, especially given the high-quality cooking on display, while generous touches and warm hospitality add to the fun. Every table is treated to glossy XL olives and a generous bread selection, for example, while staff appear promptly with a giant black pepper mill, ready to garnish each dish with a theatrical flourish.

Not every restaurant in London needs to rewrite the rulebook, and Giorgio’s foolproof formula of simple food, generous hospitality and just enough showmanship to make any meal here feel special, is a testament to that.

About

Set within the historic Leadenhall Market in the City of London, Giorgio Ristorante Italiano brings traditional Italian cooking, warm hospitality and a relaxed sense of occasion to one of the capital’s most atmospheric settings. The grand Victorian arches, cobbled walkways and soaring glass ceilings of the market create a striking backdrop, while the restaurant’s interior feels elegant, bright and classically Italian. Expect wooden panelling, neutral walls, vintage artwork and crisp white tablecloths, creating a timeless setting for romantic meals, family dining, client lunches or celebrations.

The team at Giorgio Ristorante Italiano is passionate about authentic Italian cuisine, drawing influence from their hometowns in Italy and using fresh ingredients throughout the menu. Pasta is crafted daily on site, steaks and cuts of meat are sourced from respected Surrey farms, and the kitchen offers a wide selection of fish and seafood dishes. Starters include burrata with avocado, tomato and basil, Scottish smoked salmon with capers and red onion, crisp fried squid with courgettes or a classic chicken liver pate.

Mains cover soups, risottos and a strong pasta selection, from black ink spaghetti with tiger prawns and cherry tomatoes to homemade ravioli filled with ricotta and spinach. Fish dishes include chef’s fish cakes or pan-fried salmon with a parmesan and parsley crust, while meat options range from roast lamb with almond crust to duck breast with caramelised pear and balsamic sauce. Side dishes include salads, potatoes and seasonal vegetables.

The drinks list at Giorgio Ristorante Italiano is extensive, offering Italian and international wines, including changing wines of the month across white, red and rosé, plus champagne, sparkling wine, beer, cocktails and soft drinks.

Planning a special occasion? Giorgio Ristorante Italiano boasts a cave-style private space for 10-12 guests. This semi-private spot doesn't have a door, but offers a secluded backdrop for you and your guests.

The Konester

I have been frequenting Giorgio for a number of years and it never fails to live up to its own high standards. From the polite and friendly staffto the congenial surroundings, convivial ambience and, of course, excellent, hearty fayre, it is a venue I would recommend time and again. That is a rare achievement in a post-pandemic era.

lunch
The food here is very good and was enjoyed by the group. The portions were of a good size but quality did not suffer. The bread was also excellent. Service was also very good and was prompt, even though we were in the corner.

Our new find
Can't believe we only just found this place – it's a hidden gem! Great service and perfect atmosphere for business lunch. Food is excellent, couldn't fault it. Be prepared not to finish it as the portions are rather generous!
