SquareMeal Review of Great Court Restaurant

Occupying an enviable position amidst the overstated grandeur of the British Museum’s Great Court, this Benugo-run restaurant sits happily beneath the building’s impressive domed glass roof. Thanks to some clever planning, the space has an almost-serene vibe very different to the attraction’s inevitable bustle, helped by accomplished service that is speedy but not rushed. The menu also deviates from the please-all, cash-cow options you might expect: prawn ceviche is given a vibrant kick with generous amounts of fresh lime and spikes of hot red chilli, while chicken ‘saltimbocca’ shows off pleasingly succulent meat crowned by a shard of crisp jamón. Staff scoop plump marinated olives from jars and carve legs of ham from the central bar, and a range of sherries tagged onto the wine list also reinforces the venue’s underplayed Hispanic theme. A boon in this tourist-trap part of town.

I booked this restaurant as we were attending a British museum members evening. We arrived and were shown to quite a nice table but it was downhill from there. There was only a ‘Viking set dinner’ available at £22.50 for 2 courses and £27 for 3. The choices were uninspiring and we wanted to order from the a la carte menu but were told this was not available, not even the side dishes. My husband only wanted one course but was charged for 2 and was only very begrudgingly refunded the money. My starter was mean and finished in under a minute. Service was at best patronising. I will not return to this restaurant and it is a shame as it would have been good to have somewhere good to eat at the BM.
