SquareMeal Review of Goodman City

"Great steak how it should be" is the big selling point at this "reliable New York-inspired steakhouse" – an upmarket City carnivore, where USDA 150-day corn-fed Angus beef takes pride of place. "Absolutely faultless" T-bones, rib-eyes, sirloins and the like are priced by weight or you might choose to luxuriate over a surf 'n' turf of USDA fillet with lobster and king prawns. Upcycled side dishes include mac 'n' cheese with truffle or lobster, and everything from corn to plum tomatoes is given the grill treatment. Starters aside, pickings are thin if you're not here for steak: a burger, a chicken dish, the day's fish, and that covers it. The beef-friendly selection of wines includes Bordeaux from the Enomatic and classy Californians at elevated prices, while knowledgeable service "takes care of everything". The darkly sexy decor looks more cheerful after dark, when red leather and soft lighting create an inviting ambience.

You can't do much wrong with Goodman City, the steak is amazing, the service is consistent and to very high standards, you really feel looked after. The food & drinks from the steak to the wine their pair your meat with is carefully selected and to high quality. You HAVE to visit this restaurant!

I was texting my boyfriend saying 'we have to go here' before I'd even finished my main, I loved it that much. Probably the best steak I've had in London! I had such a good evening out here. The choice of steaks is very extensive and my choice, the fillet, was fantastic, absolutely faultless. I recommend you get the lobster tails too. I sometimes find in steak places that offer lobster that it can be a little secondary to the steak but that wasn't the case here. The sides are divine too, I really recommend the mac and cheese. My dessert, a chocolate and banana mousse was good but nothing to shout about. Who cares? You're there for the meat. Service was friendly and very knowledgeable, our waiter made us feel very welcome and taken care of. Surroundings are very City old school - all intimate, dark and woody, I loved it. There are very few places I think 'I must come back here ASAP' but this is one of the them. Just go!

A reliable New-York-inspired steakhouse, with a relatively good value lunch menu option.

The combination of a fantastic selection of beef and the attentive and friendly staff makes this experience an island of excellence in a sea of mediocrity served up in the City

I rate Goodman over many of the other steak restaurants in the City, however this time the fillet steak was not up to scratch. A rare slightly disappointing lunch for once.

Goodman does steak very well. Great for city business lunches and after work meet ups with friends. The question for me is usually Hawksmoor Vs. Goodman in the city. Goodman does not dissapoint… They claim they source the best meat ‘We make life difficult for ourselves, to make sure we bring the best to you’ and I ordered the FILLET (400G) £45 and was very satified with the flavours the steak delivered on. The staff were knowledgeable, my fellow diners looked at ease, the wines to compliment really did and all in all you can't go wrong with Goodman.

If it's meat (and steaks in particular) you're after you will come to the right place. In my view up there with hawksmoor in terms of best steaks in town. Very good service and a buzzing atmosphere at this city outpost

The City branch is the best of the 3 London venues for Goodman (Mayfair & C Warf), as it has the best blend of an American bar atmosphere with window booths, along with the slightly more formal table arrangements in the larger dining space. The steaks are exceptional quality (USDA Porterhouse especially so), with more flavour and melt in the mouth texture even than the much lauded Yorkshire sourced beef on offer in rival, Hawksmoor. The truffle chips also add a special something to the menu, and help to justify the worrying trend in most London steakhouses of charging £4.50 for a small bowl of chips. - If you are on a budget, the burger is the best in town (the kitchen uses off-cuts from the USDA steaks to make them), and for £15 (including chips) is worth every penny, especially if washed down with either something from the excellent wine menu, or a glass of Greenwich Meantime ale from the bar.

Never strayed away from Gauchos before for the total carnivore experience and I'm glad we finally did. From walking in the door the meet and greet was fantastic. Very friendly and welcoming, the waitress was super passionate and knowledgeable. The bar staff were very happy. The food…OMG… and I never use this but it was magnificent. I recommend the Rib Eye cooked to their liking and recommendation. All 4 of us ordered the same and not one of us was dissapointed. It was just heavenly. Also try the simple things with it. Mushrooms were fabulous but the best side in my opinion is the carrots. Chives and butter, very simple but delicious. It's as pricey as Gauchos but I'd give it a little better on value for money. It's efficient so if you're in a hurry it doesn't have to be an epic lunch. Couldn't wax lyrical enough about this little gem. Glad we strayed from the normal path and we carnivores are all converted. Thank you Goodman and all of your terrific City staff. Big smile that I certainly rarely get these days with food. I almost want to go back today.

This year I have lunched nearly every week at Goodmans and every time it has been great. From the warm welcome at reception, you get fantastic and friendly service throughout your stay. The steaks are of the highest quality and cooked to perfection. A great venue for a business lunch.
