SquareMeal Review of 7 Tales

7 Tales at Sosharu closed permanently on 3 August 2018. The restaurant plans to reopen at a different location in late 2018.

Deep underground, where once stood seminal acid house nightclub Turnmills, 7 Tales deals in killer cocktails. This moodily lit, metrosexy, Manga comic strip-lined den is the standalone new cellar bar at Jason Atherton’s chic Clerkenwell izakaya, Sosharu. Lounge on a banquette (they’re the colour of Kikkoman soya sauce) and peruse the choice of sturdy stirs from £9.50. A trio to try on a list that also includes several Nikka whisky fixes, are a rice-washed Beefeater gin and sesame Martini; Gastown (a mezcal, Fernet Branca, Cynar and maple syrup Manhattan) and Champagne Papi (a Perrier Jouët, umeshu plum liqueur and banana sparkler garnished with trinkets from a plastic globe dispensed by a Japanese-style vending machine). Fans of saké and whiskies – Japanese or Scots – are well-served. Snack on clam and green onion tempura, or Wagyu beef skewers and fresh spring vegetables with tomato miso.
