Replacing Made in the Shade on Hoxton Street, burger-centric Number 177 has a distinctly East London vibe. Tea lights and strings of fairy lights brighten up the rustic wooden tables, while the fun cocktails and accessible menu appeal to a trendy crowd. Food comes as it’s ready, so on our visit we kicked things off with fried mac ‘n’ cheese balls, which weren’t quite as well-stuffed as we’d have like, before being joined by mini chicken wings that were a sticky delight. The main event was a stacked burger, loaded with heaps of BBQ-drenched pulled pork, while a side of sweet potato chips was remixed with parsley, pomegranate seeds and tzatziki. We’d recommend getting involved with the cocktails, in particular The Lemon Pie: lemon mousse, vanilla vodka and a Digestive biscuit rim. Amiable staff and reasonable pricing help to make this an atmospheric dining spot for decent comfort food.
