Taken from our list of the UK’s 100 best restaurants, here’s the second instalment of our favourite restaurants for private events beyond London
11. Restaurant Sat Bains with Rooms
4, 6, 8, 16
Nottingham, NG7 2SA
0115 986 6566
This cleverly fashioned barn conversion in Nottingham’s industrial wastelands is home to one of the UK’s most astonishing culinary talents. Sat Bains’s meticulously planned tasting menus offer a succession of startling dishes involving obtuse pairings and dazzling presentation.
12. Restaurant Mark Greenaway
Edinburgh, EH2 3LJ
0131 226 1155
Beautiful decor, mind-blowing food, impeccable service – Mark Greenaway ticks all the boxes at this gorgeous Georgian building in Edinburgh’s Old Town. Spectacular modern cooking is the deal, paired with wine from a specially designed vault in the basement.
Chobham, Surrey, GU24 8QS
Fine dining (and drinking) for a very reasonable price is the attraction at Stovell’s, a sympathetically restored 16th-century farmhouse. Fernando Stovell fashions complex, finely honed dishes strewn with global influences, but there are also simple grills and deconstructed classics.
14. 64 Degrees
Brighton, East Sussex, BN1 1HB
It’s hip, edgy, frantic and cramped, but that’s what you’d expect in hip, edgy Brighton. 64 Degrees is also a thrillingly theatrical concept, with an open kitchen occupying half the space and chefs wheeling out the dishes as they are ready from a menu of 16 intensely flavoured small plates.
15. The Raby Hunt
Summerhouse, Co Durham, DL2 3UD
This restaurant-with-rooms near Darlington is elegantly contemporary in style, with proceedings focused on just one uber-sophisticated tasting menu from the cutting edge of modern British cuisine. The magisterial wine list offers class and value across the range.
16. Y Polyn
Capel Dewi, Carmarthenshire, SA32 7LH
This wonderfully remote Welsh restaurant is run in the style of a chill-out country inn with scrubbed-up rustic surroundings and a dressed-down outlook. Expect big portions, local ingredients and earthy presentation in Med-accented dishes.
17. The Treby Arms
Exclusive use 40
Sparkwell, Devon, PL7 5DD
Riding high on its foodie reputation, this reborn village boozer still has an affectionate pubby feel, with original beams, an old fireplace and a proper bar for the drinkers – although the emphasis is now firmly on inventive high-end cooking. Leave space for the wacky desserts.
18. André Garrett at Cliveden
Taplow, Berkshire, SL6 0JF
André Garrett’s sumptuous, softly hued dining room sits well amid Cliveden’s flamboyant glamour, but there’s also a feeling of genuine intimacy about eating here – and the views are stunning. Expect contemporary French cuisine and a wine list tailored for living the high life.
19. Manchester House
Manchester, M3 3BZ
0161 835 2557
Aiden Byrne’s flagship combines a thrilling industrial-lite restaurant with a glamorous bar/lounge – located 10 floors apart in a reconfigured office block. The kitchen sends out a raft of exceedingly on-trend ideas, some of which have already found TV fame on Great British Menu.
Birmingham, B15 3DU
0121 454 3434
Occupying a handsome townhouse in leafy Edgbaston, Simpsons is one of the touchstones for fine dining in Birmingham – with added clout provided by boutique bedrooms and a cookery school. Chef-director Luke Tipping delivers top-drawer modern food with real vision.
