About

Yemen Heaven brings something unique to York's dining scene: a modern, refined take on Yemenite cuisine, rooted in heritage and shaped by careful, considered cooking. Set within a historic Grade II-listed building, it offers an intimate space where the food can really shine.

At the centre of it all is founder and chef Muna, whose cooking draws on a life shaped between Yemen and Saudi Arabia. What began as home-cooked meals shared with friends has evolved into a restaurant that carries that same sense of generosity, now translated into a more polished setting. Her approach with Yemen Heaven is to bring time-honoured techniques to the forefront, from slow-cooked stews and spice-layered broths, to hand-stretched breads. Each treasured recipe is prepared with a sense of respect, honouring generational cooking.

You'll see that the menu beautifullu reflects this philosophy, moving from smaller mezze dishes to more substantial main courses. Small plates include hummus in various forms, from classic to truffle and lamb, alongside baba ganoush, offering a simple but well-executed start. Salads such as tabboula bring freshness, while crispy bites like falafel and kibbah add texture and warmth.

From there, the focus shifts to breads and mains that showcase the kitchen’s depth. Manousha is a traditional flatbread and comes topped with zaatar, blending wild thyme, sesame and sumac, or with spinach, sun-dried tomatoes and pomegranate molasses for something sharper. Mains are all about recipes that enjoy slow, deliberate cooking and rich, hard-earned flavours, whether it’s oven-baked seabass marinated in garlic and spices, or lamb cooked on the bone until tender, served with rice, fresh salad and bisbas.

As for desserts, try the Um Ali which has layers of bread, cream, coconut and nuts, offers a rich finish, while areeka combines dates, sesame oil and cream for a true taste of Yemenite food culture.
