Home of the largest natural lake in England, Windermere is a beautiful spot in the Lake District to enjoy nature and eat some delightful dishes. As a popular tourist destination, Windermere contains tons of holiday homes despite the fact that there is only one official village on the waterfront-- aptly named Bowness-on-Windermere. Nevertheless, nineteen islands occupy the lake, meaning that the geography of the area provides a comfortable place to fish, boat, and swim.

At the risk of sounding pretentious, we think William Wordsworth summed up Windermere best when he wrote ' With exultation, at my feet I saw / Lake, islands, promontories, gleaming bays, / A universe of Nature’s fairest forms / Proudly revealed with instantaneous burst, / Magnificent, and beautiful, and gay.'

Beautiful, isn't that? A much better summation of the natural Windermere territory than most SquareMeal editorial team members could muster up.

Windermere itself truly is worth the high praise, as a stunning natural territory boasting of food as exiting as its geography. Though most visitors probably don't visit the Lake District purely because of the food, we are sure that it comes as a welcome surprise that such delicious cuisine can be found here. Windermere boasts of a variety of very quality restaurants, including Michelin star winning Hrishi and Gilpin Spice.

Many of these restaurants take advantage of the fertile land and rich water habitats in the area, favouring the fresh produce and the delicious fish that nature produces. Nevertheless, you won't find only fish shops in the area-- diners in Windermere can enjoy cuisines such as Modern European, Japanese, Thai, or even South African. Though British and seafood places dominate the selection, there are a wide variety of options available within these classifications, and you'll find a castle to dine in as much as a neighborhood chippy.

It may be difficult to find a place to eat when the nature is so captivating, but don't worry-- SquareMeal is here to help, and we've compiled a list for you of restaurants in Windermere.
