Nestled on Broadrayne Farm just outside Grasmere, The Yan is a family-run bistro offering relaxed, soulful dining in the heart of the Lake District. Created to redefine casual dining in an area known for fine dining restaurants, it’s a place where locals and visitors alike can enjoy unpretentious, home-cooked food in a warm, welcoming bistro setting.
Inside, the decor combines rustic simplicity with cosy charm. Whitewashed wooden panelling, textured walls and a glowing wood burner create an inviting atmosphere, while bench seating and wooden tables keep things relaxed and informal.
Menus change daily to showcase the best local and seasonal produce, much of it sourced from nearby farms. Expect comforting, flavourful dishes such as crispy pork belly with chorizo and cannellini beans, confit chicken leg with duck-fat potatoes, or gnocchi with chestnut mushrooms and baby spinach. The Yan’s signature shepherd’s pie remains a firm favourite, made with slowly braised Grasmere Herdwick lamb, cheesy mashed potato, cured ham and parsley garden peas.
Sundays are a highlight with slow-cooked Cumbrian meats, crispy roasties, rich gravy and Yorkshire puddings. Sharing platters of slow-cooked brisket, lamb, pork or a vegetarian option come with all the trimmings. A dedicated kids’ menu adds a thoughtful touch, offering veggie curry, cheesy bean tart or a beet brisket bap instead of standard nuggets and chips.
Desserts include sticky toffee pudding and Jaffa mouse, a classic chocolate mousse with a blood orange gel on a bed of sponge. There’s also a well-chosen drinks list of wines, cocktails, local beers, spirits and aperitifs. Guests who’d like to stay can choose from bistro bedrooms, self-catering apartments, holiday cottages or glamping pods around the farm. With honest cooking, great wine and genuine hospitality, The Yan Grasmere is a true taste of the Lakes.
