The former Edwardian toilets adjacent to Clapham Common tube now serve as an altogether more appealing public convenience. Wine and charcuterie – ‘WC’: see what they did there? – is the proposition at this candlelit, subterranean watering hole, the brainchild of local lads Jayke Mangion (of Battersea restaurant Entrée) and business partner Andy Bell. There’s room for 50 inside the handsomely appointed space – all black leather banquette booths, original mosaic floors, tiling and skylights – and the same again at street level on a picket-fenced alfresco terrace, set with jolly patio furniture. Select from two dozen wines starting at £20 a bottle (for house Languedoc rouge et blanc) and rising to £50: all available by the glass. The launch menu (set to be expanded) also offers Brixton-brewed beers, charcuterie and fromage boards from £12, plus various salads. Not your bog-standard bar.
