SquareMeal Review of Wahaca

Ex-MasterChef winner Thomasina Miers now oversees branches of her popular canteen-style eatery across the capital and beyond, luring good-timers and young families with its mix of colourful, fashion-conscious surrounds and ‘flavoursome’ Mexican cooking. Vibrantly spiced street food is the deal, which means tacos filled with grilled steak or marinated, slow-cooked pork pibil, crisp tostadas with ceviche or refried beans, taquitos, quesadillas and specials such as the queso fundido – Mexico’s answer to fondue. Salads, grills and burritos bulk out the menu, while a heart-stopping pudding selection includes churros y chocolate and dulce de leche ice cream. Wahaca’s eco-credentials bear scrutiny, and the upbeat young vibe is fuelled by copious Tequila cocktails – even if that true Mexican zing is sometimes missing from the plates. Note: no bookings, but you can always sip a margarita while you wait.

Love, love, love this place, go every day if I could! The menu is extensive for "street food", the service is always speedy and friendly and as i've come to expect, the value for money is excellent.

After several unsuccessful attempts at obtaining a table at the Covent Garden restaurant I finally managed to try out the much raved about Wahaca at the newly opened venue in Canary Wharf. Upon entering its easy to see why it does so well with a carnival-like buzzing atmosphere and energetic and enthusiastic staff to match. Diners are spoilt for choice with the ample menu which was easily deconstructed by our uber friendly waitress Glenda (as she announced three times) . I opted for the Fish a la Veracruzana whilst my fellow diners went for the street food dishes which looked vibrant and flavoursome. The fish, a sustainable pollock was beautifully cooked in a parcel with a tasty and nicely balanced spiced tomato, wine and caper sauce. Perfect food for the soul especially on a cold winter's night. In summary, a night in wahaca reminds you of what simple yet well flavoured and appealing mexican cuisine should taste like and most impressively what good service should look like. Well done, I shall certainly be going back for more.
