With spectacular views of the Castle and Edinburgh’s Royal Mile and Old Town, James Thomson’s rooftop Tower Restaurant has a beautiful location above the National Museum of Scotland. Menus cover all-day dining, from brunch via afternoon tea to dinner, focusing on seasonal Scottish produce – Ballimore oysters from Loch Fyne, Dingwall haggis and Perthshire lamb. A trio of Scottish salmon encompassed home-cured, delicate mousse and smoked varieties, while Isle of Mull lobster thermidor was tender, creamy and rich. Perfectly grilled dry-aged rib-eye steak followed, the Aberdeen Angus Scotch beef served simply with hand-cut chips and buttery béarnaise. Desserts were suitably indulgent: dark Belgian chocolate terrine spiked with Maldon salt and sweet honeycomb; and a superb peanut-butter parfait adorned with chocolate sauce and salted-caramel popcorn brittle. Alternatively, end the meal with Scottish cheeses, sourced directly from Mellis’s cheesemonger’s. Deft service and the romantic setting also ensure the popularity of this elegant proposition.
