SquareMeal Review of The Prince Stoke Newington

Following a change of ownership and some sympathetic surgery, this backstreet boozer and beer garden has been restored to its green-tiled, stripped-back, Victorian prime – and it’s now an indie free house well worth seeking out. Vintage speakers blare out a muso-cool playlist, while punters sip affordable wines, spritzes, fizzes and a trio of seasonal cocktails made with locally distilled spirits, homemade syrups and cordials. There’s also a useful range of traditional London-style craft ales from the likes of Beavertown and Hackney hopmeisters Pressure Drop. The sensibly short daily menu of heritage-inspired pub grub might promise home-cured charcuterie or raw mackerel with sea purslane and potatoes, ahead of charred spring vegetables with sheep’s cheese and herbs, Stilton burger or onglet and chips, with fresh strawberries or baked vanilla cheesecake for dessert.

The Prince is our local and we go there regularly. It's off Church St so you need to know about it to find it but it rivals lots of the restaurants on Church St and is worth the 5 minute walk south. It's family friendly, has a great atmosphere – a stylish gastro pub with old wooden tables, light and airy in summer but also cozy in winter. There are 2 TVs but they are small and not intrusive and useful when there are big sporting events to follow! You can eat in the main bar or in a separate area away from the bar and there are 2 outside spaces. The burgers are delicious and come in a number of sizes. There is always a good selection of starters like whitebait, pate with toast, interesting salads and for mains the theme is good wholesome food in pretty decent portions. Risotto is always done well, there are special pastas, always a chicken dish, usually something like a lamb shank and a steak and the chips are delicious. The wine list is large and good value. You can rent out the separate eating area for parties and there is a larger space above the pub. we love The Prince and keep going back.
