Bronze Award
The Westbury's nut-brown, art deco-style Polo Bar is always worth a look – that's ‘polo' as in sporting chukkas, not Ralph Lauren shirts. However , if Polo suggests mint, you might try a Maker's Mark bourbon julep or an alcohol-free mela verda from a selection of reasonably priced cocktails and mocktails. Otherwise, the list is strong on martinis – sip orange blossom, lemon tart or one of the pimped-up signatures such as Spitfire (a Chivas 18-year-old and Drambuie toddy to warm dreary December nights). Wines such as a Mendoza Malbec work well with posh nosh along the lines of panko-crusted prawns, angus beef chips and spiced nduja Scotch eggs. The feel is uniformly high-end, but the decor splits opinion: understated luxury or a wee bit bland, despite those bling Swarovski crystal blinds.
