It might be a 15th century pub, but duo Richard and Lindsey have transformed The Plough into something that fits the 21st century. Still, this North Yorkshire gem has plenty of charm, and is located in Wombleton, just three miles from Helmsley. The pub has been serving refreshments and sustenance since 1698, but the food here is not your typical pub grub, and the menu certainly doesn’t consist of microwaved steaks. Rather, The Plough team’s hard work has landed them in top spots amongst eating guides, and made them a firm favourite with locals.
The dinner menu at The Plough takes shape as a set offering. Starting with a choice of starters like treacle cures salmon with prawns and pickled cucumber, it continues onto varied mains like chunky cod filled with coconut and a coriander lentil broth, slow roast sirloin with truffle chips, and a Cumberland sausage spiral with creamed cabbage and gravy. Desserts meanwhile offer the likes of vanilla creme brulee, and the menu offers suggested pairings for each dish.
The Plough also runs a great value village set menu for an hour on Monday evenings, with choices of two or three courses, designed to bring locals together for an evening of something special. Aperitifs include a Kir Royale made with Calancombe Est. cassis, and then it's straight into the starters, with choices like roast butternut squash risotto, caramelised pumpkin seeds, parmesan and warm bread; a burrata salad with melon and pomegranate; and a warm sage and onion sausage roll with cider apple sauce. For your main meal, you can enjoy a slow roast honey glazed duck breast, pheasant with creamed cabbage and bacon, or orzo pasta risotto with organic salmon. For dessert, it’s a classic chocolate mousse with ice cream or a selection of local artisanal cheeses.
