The Mitre

SquareMeal Review of The Mitre

A snug fit on leafy Holland Park Avenue, this grey-fronted gastropub/brasserie is a handy spot for thirsty and hungry types with its circular zinc bar and tables dotted all around. The menu is a hotchpotch of British and Mediterranean ideas based on good sourcing (sustainable fish, traceable meats etc), from small plates such as crispy ham hock salad with piccalilli, baked Cornish crab or Spanish charcuterie to big helpings of 28-day aged rib-eye with Café de Paris butter, shoulder of West Country lamb with smoked garlic mash or herb-crusted Lowestoft plaice with mussels and braised artichokes. Long lunches and weekend breakfasts suit the local crowd as well as tourists, while the drinks list includes real ales (Sharp’s Doom Bar, Fuller’s Chiswick), a modest selection of cocktails and some reasonably priced international wines.

Went for Sunday lunch, on a very sunny autumnal day. We sat outside on the terrace to take advantage of the good weather. I ordered the chicken liver pate to start, followed by the duck ragu. Both were excellent; the pate, smooth and flavorsome with a tangy red onion chutney. The duck ragu, rich, with a fantastic sauce reduction, which had a beautiful depth of flavour, and plenty of duck- most impressed. This was accompanied by a couple of glasses of Pinot Noir, recommended by the bar staff, which matched well. The only issue we had, was the time taken from starters to mains. I put this down to the fact that we were outside, and not visible by the waiting staff. Inside the pub was busy, with the restaurant section completely full, customers, a mixture of well-healed locals and tourists. Overall, a very pleasurable experience- I will definitely return.
