Nestled in the quaint village of Hambledon, The Merry Harriers is a rural British gastropub full of history, charm and delicious food. The pub specialises in farm-to-table cuisine and has been listed as one of the Good Food Guide’s best Sunday roasts.
Dating back to the sixteenth century, The Merry Harriers has a cosy feel with low ceilings covered in old oak beams, wooden bar stools, olive green walls and a crackling fire. It’s tastefully designed with a high-end quality while in keeping with its rustic surroundings. The venue also has fifteen boutique bedrooms for those looking for a peaceful night sleep in the heart of Surrey Hills.
At the end of 2023, the pub was taken over by the team at Hilltop Kitchen, Alex Winch and Sam Fiddian Green, who also happen to be childhood friends and Surry locals. Inspired by British classics, The Merry Harriers embraces a nose-to-tail approach to cooking. The daily changing menu evolves with the seasons and utilises whatever comes from their own farm. If you’re after a quick snack to accompany one of their award-winning local ales, their bar snack menu offers old-school classics. Think bubble and squeak croquettes with tomato relish and scotch egg with brown sauce. Meanwhile, their a la carte menu kicks off with nibbles like English radishes with whipped cods roe and moves on to starters such as smoked mackerel pâté and horseradish on a hot buttered crumpet. For mains, there’s pheasant schnitzel with pickled cabbage and pink firs or crispy pork belly with hand-dived scallops, turnip purée and crispy pancetta. Their award-winning Sunday menu is well worth a try and there’s classic wines and innovative cocktails to wash it down.
For a taste of the best of British cuisine in a rather beautiful location, pop by The Merry Harriers.
