Close to Ashford International station, but also within walking distance of some lovely Kentish countryside, this gastropub seems to have all bases covered. Drinkers and diners are equally well served, although the latter are in the ascendancy these days – thanks to an industrious kitchen with an accessible approach to things. Pub diehards can take their pick from pies with mash, burgers or beer-battered fish and chips, while those with more adventurous tastes might be tempted by chilli prawns with guacamole and sourdough or confit duck with braised lettuce, peas and bacon. Sharing plates, salads and steaks flesh out the line-up, with desserts bringing St Clement’s cream or caramelised vanilla rice pudding. Kentish ales and Kentish gin are the stars of the drinks list, but there are some intriguing wines too. Given the pub’s proximity of the bracing North Downs, it’s no surprise that the owners have a friendly attitude towards dogs.
