Following a major makeover, this landmark Kew pub (formerly the Rose & Crown) now takes its name from the sport played on the nearby green – its smart terrace is the place for armchair umpires. Indoors, the low-beamed old girl has been gussied up in postmodernist soft pink and mink-patterned fabrics to tie in with a salmon paint job that will appeal to the neighbourhood’s Farrow & Ball believers. Ales include Portobello pilsner, Sambrook’s and Eton & Windsor on tap, plus a good selection of craft beers such as London Black Cab and Innis & Gunn. Wines start at £15, and the food isn’t OTT either: £12.50 pays for confit duck leg with sweet potato and red cabbage from a menu that also has sea bass, razor clams and king prawns with asparagus, plus beef carpaccio, foie gras with brioche, sharing platters, sandwiches and old-school puds.
