SquareMeal Review of The Canonbury Tavern

It’s all about the beer garden: overlooked by the Georgian houses of leafy Barnsbury, this huge space is a mix of decking and patios scattered with smart garden chairs. Come the summer months, it buzzes with families and general sun-seeking drinkers. Inside, The Canonbury is nearly as spacious (split into dining room and bar areas), but with somewhat bland styling. The menu plays it safe, offering a crowd-pleasing assortment at middle-of-the-road prices. It’s divided into sections: meat (steak and ale pudding with roasted root vegetables), fish (smoked haddock and salmon fish pie) and vegetarian (mushroom risotto, truffle oil and Parmesan crisp), alongside burgers and rotisserie chickens with a choice of marinades. Amiable staff pour the wine (from a large choice listed by grape variety) as well as a decent selection of draught beers and lagers.

Really unwelcoming

I had the oddest experience there. Went there 2nd of January with my son as we went for a new year walk and wanted some light refreshments. A young blonde lady was really snippy about some changes I wanted made to my drink, it really shocked me. But within the rudeness she agreed to make the changes. I think she could see I was about to confront her regarding her attitude, and so she became polite and helpful.

When wanted to order more items from the menu we approached the young brunette lady. She was so off and huffy and would not even look at us, it was so weird and uncomfortable. She snapped a little at my son when he was trying to find the toilet.

I have cerebral palsy, and it’s quite obvious I’m physically limited, as such I rely on the good will of others. But I got the impression, especially with the brunette lady that simply placing orders was offensive to her.

I do try and find some compassion, and wonder what can be going on in someone’s life that they are that evasive and seemingly offended by the presence of a customer. But still it was a horrible experience. Especially as I do feel a bit vulnerable and kindness in staff really goes a long way

Really nice gastropub. Went for a friend's birthday and was lovely – it is massive but laid out so the room is broken up so it feels strangely intimate. I would highly recommend this for a birthday/celebration do. I went on Sunday and it was very kiddy friendly – I don't have one but if I did I would bring that with me too!
