About The Balcon

Sitting neatly at the cross-section between tourist-land and serene St James’s, The Balcon is a place for daytime deal-making and night-time romance. Matt Greenwood (ex-Blixen, Caravan) now heads the kitchen, steering things deftly away from ‘hotel restaurant’ (the Sofitel is attached) to dining destination – whether for breakfast, weekend brunch, lunch or dinner. He has also trendied up the menu, adding touches of sumac here, a sprinkle of yuzu there. Pan-fried snails with chorizo and sweet-potato purée is the best starter. For mains, both the lamb with pearl barley and cavalo nero, and the crispy sea bream with laverbread beurre blanc and samphire are triumphs of classical cooking: pair them with glasses of Wairau River Pinot Noir and Languedoc Picpoul de Pinet, respectively. The food is respectable, if not entirely memorable, yet unfortunately the atmosphere doesn’t quite match the quality of the cooking. Nevertheless, Greenwood has made a promising start.

A certain glamour, a great dessert trolley and oh, that butter...
17 May 2016
The Balcon, Pall Mall - walking into a champagne bar exudes the glamour. Big glass windows, high ceiling and flower arangements that set the style, The Balcon is part of the Sofitel London Hotel, with a separate entrance. I love a little poncieness in life. A place like that does not have too many waiters. No one would be seen doing nothing even when the rush hour crowd has thinned out. They will be polishing glass doors, have the tables laid out, interacting with diners and arranging bottles always with a task at hand. Uniforms which have been cleaned and steamed iron immaculately; more so than my finest frock, despite this, it was all very casual and not too intimidating. If The Balcon restaurant is too formal for you, Sofitel London also has a separate wine bar, St James Bar and a lounge for afternoon tea...with a live harpist! We started of lunch with this bread and butter. The butter dish is on proper stoneware. I love the weight and the simplicity of it but I thought that the butter was fairly normal. You have to try their afternoon tea menu which looks amazing! The pastry trolley is just too tempting and it was a little cruel to have to choose ONE from the trolley. So, we went for a proper full on dessert portion. The Balcon is a restaurant suitable for business and corporate dining and entertaining but on a social level to impress your date or like me, just a comfortable dining atmosphere in splendorous décor and impeccable service was just right for a lazy Monday afternoon. After all, you should note that desserts were overall a winner! The Balcon is not a cheap place. Drinks, wine by the glass starts around £7 - £8 per glass. Cocktails are at £16.00 and bubbly at £ 22.00 per glass. You can still eat at a reasonable price at £25.00 for 3 course lunch menu including a glass of wine and coffee.

I went to the Balcon with 3 friends for my belated birthday celebration. Two of us arrived early and we had a couple of drinks at the bar with lovely nibbles. We then went to our table for dinner and we all had a fab time, the food was great and the service excellent! They even brought me a yummy dessert with a candle!! (On the house!) I just adore the place and I wish I could celebrate my birthday there every year!! Can't recommend it enough, lovely, lovely and I can't wait to go back! Sofia Baguley – May 12th 20141

The Balcon, is new, great and fills an important gap in this part of Pall Mall. It is open all day. This idea of all day service is great for busy business people and the quality doesn't dissappoint. The kitchen is probably still fine-tuning a thing or two, but there is potential in heaps. The Champagne Balcon, is a funny feature and this place must be in with a shot at serving the greatest number of different Champagnes by the glass. An expense account does help, because this deepest SW1 and the prices are according, however, at least one delivers. I would even go as far as saying that this is a good pre- or post- theatre option as the deco is so nice that it qualifies as a ‘destination’. Well done Sofitel, well done Mr Roux Jr…
