Smartly whitewashed and dripping with vibrant flower baskets in the summer, this Grade II-listed former pub is now a really inviting prospect. Inside, much of its former life has been retained –
lovely old stone fireplaces, beams and wonky walls – although it feels comfortable in its new skin as a relaxed, friendly neighbourhood restaurant. There’s nothing too challenging on the eclectic
menu, although dishes are skilfully cooked and thoughtfully presented: tapas plates, tempura prawns or confit duck could precede fish pie, slow-cooked pork shoulder with five-spice sauce or roast
rump of Bowland Lamb with marinated Mediterranean vegetables and blackcurrant sauce. To finish, it’s back to the nursery for rhubarb crumble or bread-and-butter pud. Otherwise, lunch and
early-evening ‘beat the clock’ deals (£11.95 for three courses) bring folk from miles around.
